Established as a first  BMC group for the recombinant  gene expression in mammalian cells, the unit has evolved through the years to the molecular virology group, where hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) viruses are the main subjects of the studies. The application of the alphavirus based expression system led to establishing of main research directions, such as: “Alphavirus-based genetic vaccine development”; “HBV replication modeling”, where we propose to initiate HBV replication by recombinant alphaviral replicons; “HBV particles morphogenesis”, where formation, stability, and release of viral and subviral particles are investigated. Distinct scientific directions, such as: “New chemical gene delivery agents”, where the variety of pyridinium derivatives discovered by scientists of the Latvian Institute of Organic synthesis are evaluated as new non-viral gene delivery agents, and “Stem cell research”, reflects the variety of our interest and high capability to change research fields without losing qualification.
