The aim of the project is to creat a new scientific group, which could provide a significant contribution to solving medicine-related problems of Latvia with modern techniques of molecular biology. The project is interdisciplinary and includes biological, chemical and medical industries. Overall, the project includes three inter-related scientific activities: (1) structural and functional studies of virus-like particles (VLPs), determiing their potential for use in vaccine development, (2), research of human genetic pathologies, which will reveal genetic factors that significantly affect the development of several serious illnesses, discover novel genes with role in disease development, as well as yield detailed genetic diagnostic methods for early prediction of disease and correct treatment selection, (3) cancer research, which will lead to a deeper understanding of formation of a number of frequently occurring cancer types in Latvia and molecular mechanisms of resistance to treatment, as well as identify new tumor antigens that could be used as a therapeutic targets for anti-cancer vaccines.
